IT’S OKAY TO DESIRE BUT…
What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. James 4:1-3 ESV
GOOD DAY. It is okay to desire anything that comes to your mind but how you process your desire is the issue. Desire is the result of feeling, and the feeling which results in desire is a faculty seeking expression.
I have seen people who are poor but don’t desire wealth, and I have heard many people who are wealthy desire to be poor. There are healthy people desiring to be sick as they reason that is the only way they will have attention. Desire is okay but how to go about and the motive are the issues. If the motive is wrong, then the tendency is to go about getting the desire in any way possible. There is a man who had a hot desire for his mother’s inheritance and excluding his three other siblings. He is the laziest of them all and did not read past the secondary school. He cannot secure any good job and, not willing to learn any trade, he started fighting over inheritance forging papers to justify himself. Yes the desire for inheritance is okay but the way of going about it is not. He got the inheritance but wasted it in extravagant living and was back to where he started in one year leaving hatred between himself and his siblings.
When you have a desire, pause to process the desire. Is it for lust of the flesh? Is it so pressing that you are pushed to do anything to acquire it? Read the story of Ahab and the plot of Naboth in 1 Kings 21:1-15. Ahab had a curse pronounced on him by God. Watch how you go about fulfilling your desire. Consider if your way of getting your desire will hurt others then don’t do it that way. Ask God for the way to go about it.
PRAY: Dear God, help us to hearken only to Your prompting. Every other power contending for our attention be made silent in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen!!!
