according to your ability

ACCORDING TO YOUR ABILITY

“To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey.”

Matthew 25:15 NIV

GOOD DAY: I remember when we were young. We lived with our grandmother who would leave food for us according to each child’s capacity to eat. I loved rice in any form so much and I thought my capacity would change when it came to rice. One day, she couldn’t cook before going out and she left an instruction for my elder sister to cook rice. She cooked far more than the normal portion and she wanted us to finish it before my grandma came. They all had their share and persuaded me to eat the rest as I loved rice. I ate more than my ability and I nearly died that day. This is a story of six decades ago and I still remember it vividly.

Many of us are in problems now because either we don’t realise our ability or we do but we deliberately went beyond our ability. If you don’t have the ability to run a car for pleasure, you don’t need to buy one because your friend has one. If your ability is to be employed under someone, don’t go and venture into your own business because of what the world says about the limitations of being a salaried worker.

Faith is knowing your ability and being the best at it and not aspiring to be another person whose ability you do not have. I had peace with my workers when I discerned each one’s ability and stopped expecting more than what they can offer.

If you stick your head into what your ability cannot carry, you will be frustrated. The times we are in now calls for a reassessment of our abilities to see where we can bear fruit.

Let us see a story in the book of Judges. “One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’ “But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’ “Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’ “But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’ “Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’ “But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine, which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’ “Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and be our king.’ “The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, then let fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’” Judges 9:8-15 NIV

The various trees knew their abilities. They refused to lead the trees. The thorn bush asked them to take refuge under its shade which was not possible otherwise fire would come out and burn them all. This is what happens when a person without ability takes on what he cannot do. Let each person look into his ability and reposition to bear fruits.

PRAY: Dear Lord Jesus, thank You that You gave me a peculiar ability to bear fruit. Please open my eyes to my ability so that I may engage it for fruitfulness.

I am a firm believer of the fact that the cause of most of the problems in our world today is tied to ‘identity crisis’. Most people don’t know who they really are.
