SELF LOVE IS NOT SELFISHNESS

“And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Matthew 22:39 NIV

GOOD DAY: Jesus reduced all the Laws to two namely Love God and Love your neighbour as yourself. Of the three recipients of love from me, I find God and my neighbour easy to understand but I don’t understand how to love myself. Love of self is usually equated to selfishness which is not good. Because we do not love ourselves, we don’t love our neighbours so we war and injure each other. Love is described in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 because it cannot be defined. “If I love people, I will be patient. I will be kind. I will not be jealous of other people. I will not be proud or boast. If I love people, I will be polite. I will not just want to please myself. I will not quickly become angry. If someone does a wrong thing against me, I will not keep it in my thoughts. If I love people, I will not be happy when wicked things happen. Instead, I will be happy when things happen that are right and true. If I love people, I will always accept their problems. I will always believe them. I will always hope for what is best. I will always be patient in any kind of trouble.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 EASY

Observe that it is written directed outward to others, now read it directed inwards to yourself. Read it like: If I love (put your name) I will be patient with her etc. Now have you noticed how you talk to yourself? We all do self-talk whether we are aware of it or not. Are you kind to yourself, appreciate yourself and patient with yourself even when you miss it? Watch your self talk and you will see how you love or don’t love yourself. Many of us are not aware of what we say to ourselves inwardly. Watch the language that you use for yourself. Most times, they are words that will spark serious fight if not enmity if we use such words for someone else. Be aware of yourself and love yourself because all said and done, you are the one that will always be present with yourself. LOVE YOURSELF.
