When fasting is needed

May 15.      1 Chronicles ch

WHEN FASTING IS NEEDED.

“After many days of seeing neither the sun nor the stars, and with the violent storm continuing to rage against us, all hope of ever getting through it alive was abandoned. After being without food for a long time, Paul stepped before them all and said, “Men, you should have obeyed me and avoided all of this pain and suffering by not leaving Crete. For God’s angel visited me last night, the angel of my God, the God I passionately serve. He came and stood in front of me and said, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul. You are destined to stand trial before Caesar. And because of God’s favor on you, he has given you the lives of everyone who is sailing with you.’”

Acts 27:20-21, 23-24 TPT

GOOD DAY: I have wondered about the long fasts that many Pentecostal denominations pronounce every year. I am not gifted about fasting and night vigils. I wonder what time is a fast necessary for a child of God. Jesus spoke in parable when the followers of the Pharisees asked Him about fasting. He said :

“Jesus’ critics questioned him. “John the prophet is known for leading his disciples to fast often and pray. As the religious leaders of the land, we do the same. Why do you and your disciples spend most of your time feasting at banquets?” Jesus replied, “Should you make the sons of the bridal chamber fast while celebrating with the Bridegroom? But when the Bridegroom is taken away from them, then you will see them fasting.””

Luke 5:33-35 TPT.

Paul threw some light to me on when a child of God should call meaningful fast. If you have a living and buoyant relationship with the Holy Spirit and you hear Him guide you and give you peace and joy all the time, then the bridegroom is with you. But when you don’t hear the Holy Spirit again and peace and joy depart from your heart over an issue to the extent that you lose all hope of deliverance, with the storm banging hard on you,  then it is time to take a fast to reconnect. Or anytime you feel disconnected with the Holy Spirit, it is time for a fast until He speaks to you. I was happy this morning when the Holy Spirit answered the question of fasting for me. I can now take a fast with meaning. You can share what you feel about when a person will need a fast in the comments section.

PRAY: Dear Lord Jesus, help me to know when You are present with me as bridegroom and when You are away so I can seek your face with a fast.

Most people fast when they have challenges and battles confronting them. Jesus stated that some problems cannot be overcome except by prayers and fasting. The Bible commands us to fast. Jesus Christ fasted. We are made to believe that a Christian who doesn’t fast regularly is a carnal believer and cannot grow, and that regular refilling by the Holy spirit requires fasting. There’s no power without sacrifice which includes fasting. When to fast depends on the individual. One church encourages it’s members to fast daily to 3pm and they do 70 days annual fasting in addition.

Help us, Lord, to discern rightly when and how to fast. There are situations and circumstances we find ourselves in, and prayers alone can not handle them. At such times, we need to fast and pray just like Jesus Christ directed His disciples to do in Matthew 17:20-21 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
